I have anxiously been awaiting Julia Vandenoever’s photos from Keira & Joe’s wedding at Dunton Hot Springs a few short weeks ago. Keira Ritter and I had such fun collaborating on these handcrafted mixed-media works of art. I can’t imagine anyone would be less than thrilled to receive a welcome bucket like that or who would have the heart to throw away a seating card that looked like this? For the invitation, we set the tone of the whole event by starting with walnut veneer cut by Joseph Kitt of Flux fine furniture, echoing the rustic grey-brown tones of Dunton’s weathered cabins and a sheet of soft cotton paper for just a hint of luxury. The next step was blind debossing the wheat-like organic texture and pressing wood and metal type in layers, keeping the message simple and the white space balanced. For a pop of color and an ode to the ghost town feel, orange grommets fastened each corner. Each invitation was presented in its own box, like a gift, with a sprig of wheat, then wrapped in distressed leather and wire with a token coral closure. This unique combination of unusual materials and rustic chic textures could only be built by an architect and the can-do custom spirit at BirdDog Press. Can’t wait to see more images from the wedding weekend on the Julia Vandenoever Photography blog!

This couple sought to integrate all of their wedding paper goods from our very first meeting, a truly organized and thoughtful pair. We conceptualized everything from the save-the-date all the way to the reception table numbers in one cohesive collaboration. Kimmie + Roger’s overall design sparked from the detail of the wedding gown. I am rarely in attendance at the weddings I design for so it is nice to have the photographer’s paper shots in action.

Kimmie and Roger’s reception tables were named for their favorite books, and in turn, the escort cards were bookmarks.

Simple chipboard with a typographical design and pop of color with the orange envelope completes this ensemble for a down-home celebration on the family farm.

The original illustrations for the design of this wedding invitation came from the bride’s Junko Yoshioka dress, which she purchased from our friends, Anna Bé, down in Denver. The wedding will take place near Durango and the couple chose colors of fresh green and earthy brown echoing the natural surroundings and laid back mountain atmosphere at Blue Lake Ranch.

This bride really thought of her wedding stationery being a part of a cohesive whole. Each piece carrying through the variation on a theme and intertwining a lot of great ideas that speak to the couple’s personality such as bookmarks for placecards {as their tables will be named after favorite children’s books} and recipes for favors in honor of their penchant for cooking together. I think it makes a lot of sense to think of everything you will need up front in addition to the standard wedding invitation and response card including programs, escort cards, menus, favors and guestbooks. Your stationer will thank you and you’ll cross a lot of to-dos off your list all at once!

Keep your fingers crossed for some great table shots from the actual wedding!

Keeping up with my promises in the frenzy of preparation for NSS ….
Right down the road, here in Lyons, sits an old historic farmstead now known as Planet Bluegrass, a fantastic venue for the various music festivals that are held there in the summer, and it is also a beautiful place to get married. Emily + Mark ultimately designed their own invitations, but in my collaborative style we had several meetings to chat about paper, unique layout, and a custom guestbook {our unique combination of letterpress signatures and envelopes handbound with a coptic stitch are now being developed into a baby book series} – developing a trust that allowed me to take their design and print it with confidence, infusing my own artistic take.

Back to my magazine fetish, there must be some depth to this obsession … as giddy as a school girl the other day, I fished out my first copy of Seeing the Everyday from my PO Box and it dawned on me … not only do I LOVE magazines, but I love magazine editor clients.
I remember walking up to the table at my fave little sip house in Boulder, Pekoe, and finding Joanne + Jake there. The first thing we established was that the theme was : no theme : just a typographical solution to their wedding suite. We explored all kinds of concepts over the next few meetings and ended up with the most simple design. And the journey was loads of laughs, too.
For all you wedding blog readers, Joanne and Jake’s Save the Date was featured over on Brooklyn Bride a couple of months back.
Jake is the editor of Skiing magazine, he and Joanne were incredible to work with, the collaborative vibe flowed so freely. So now, two of my Top 5 clients of all time just happen to be magazine editors (the other is Sid Evans of Garden & Gun), what do you think that means?

As a parallel to Heather from Calluna Events blog post today, I was reminded that I haven’t posted anything about the weddings I’ve been working on lately, and there have been many. I am thrilled to have so many spring brides and even a wonderful winter bride. I will echo Heather saying that Kristin was such a joy to work with, and although she thought she was lacking in the creative department, she had a brilliant vision for her day – “chronicles of narnia, before the thaw”
And so we came up with a textured white on white design of handsketched winterberries, velvet ribbon and a dash of midnight blue, all pulled together with a wax seal. nick loves kristin!
