I was surprised a couple of weeks ago to read on Formspring that Grace Bonney {design*sponge} is wondering where all the great new fabric designs are, comparing textiles to the recent boom of wallpaper. I guess she would be in the know as far as the design world goes, so maybe the fabric I have been discovering a lot of lately are actually old, but new to me? Anywhoo, I thought I would render a shortlist here of some textile designers I am a fan of:
- Repeat Studio
- Daisy Janie
- Cicada Studio & Cloud9 Fabrics
- Heather Moore/Skinny Laminx
- Etsuko Furuya
- Anna Maria Horner
- Kokka
- Jessica Levitt
And some great online shops to find get such fabric:
- The Fabric Bar
- Sew Mama Sew
- Fabricworm
- Pink Chalk
- Fabric Shoppe
- Purl Soho
- and of course Etsy
I personally love reading True Up – Kim can keep us all informed of all things fabric. There are also several services, including Spoonflower that will allow you to upload your own designs for print on fabric, which is quite exciting. There are many designs from experienced Spoonflowers for sale as well, I am amassing a list of favorites over there as well. At any rate, I think there are a lot of really great textiles out there to be had and wanted to share my sources. At the end of the day, my all time favorite fabric will always be vintage feedsacks!

i wish i were a better seamstress. maybe if i were a more patient person. i mean, i get it done. just don’t inspect my stitches for beauty or craftsmanship. been sewing up a storm here lately though. feedsack bags for press kits, napkins for C’s school, mending a hem here & there. my granny is good behind the sewing machine. i’m going to make a lifetime goal to make a quilt someday. it would be silly for me to say it’s a new years resolution, but maybe someday when life slows down a bit again i would like to commit myself to that kind of a project.
I’m also going through folders of blog images and such that I keep for inspiration. Here are a few related to sewing. Enjoy!

Had a little fabric fun with a friend yesterday. It was refreshing to do a creative project not for profit. We had a fun mix of feedsacks, reproductions and new fabrics, experimenting with applique on these little onsies. This is just a teaser, more to come on this project!

So, how do you teach your little ones about the alphabet? Purl Bee has an idea with fabric magnet letters. I’ve seen many a project to achieve this very same lesson in varying ways, but none that drew me in like this one because I spy a feedsack fabric here! and when I checked the list of fabrics they used, it turns out that maybe some companies are reproducing feedsack designs again? Need to investigate more, but I’m really excited. Funny they don’t mention the “N” being a feedsack pattern, but I have it in a pink/black/grey colorscheme! Another thing to investigate. Purl Bee is the online journal for Purl, an amazing place to get fabric, knitting and other crafty supplies.

I am launching the BirdDog Press // Feedsack of the Month Club for 2009 and this is the chosen feedsack design for the month of January! Each month, I will be choosing a feedsack from my Granny’s collection and recreating it for print on my letterpress.
Inspired by my Granny in South Carolina who has collected feedsacks for years and years along with her quilting friends, I made some notesets and coasters last year from letterpress designs inspired by these fabrics. She asked me to print some to send to her feedsack friends, as she was curious to see if they could match them to the actual feedsack fabrics that they collected. The idea of fabulous monthly arrivals, popular for holiday giftlists, like beer/wine, seeds/plants/flowers is really fun and was further forced into fruition upon discovery of port2port press’s Card Society and simplesong’s letterpress subscription. I’m hoping to trade each of these for my monthly subcription. I LOVE good mail!
