first art show

Happy Friday! I have been off schedule with the blog for quite some time now and honestly this will probably continue throughout the summertime. The Lyons Open Studio Tour was last weekend and I am now trying to nail down which weekend indie craft shows to commit to for the rest of the summer. In the meantime, if you missed seeing the BirdDog Press on the tour, you can still catch a glimpse of another new direction with my feedsack pattern passion, more of an artprint style – affordable art in the form of little scenes of eco-crafted paper quilt collages. My first coffee shop gallery show is on display for the month of June at my favorite local Bhakti Chai hangout, The Stone Cup!

Letterpress Weekend

Saturday, the opening of Pressed!, on the second level of the Denver Pavilions, 500 16th Street, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., featuring a comprehensive exhibit of works by letterpress typographers including the Hamilton 10th Anniversary show, Prints from Hatch Showprint, Nashville, TN, Works produced at the TypeLab/Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection at the University of Texas, Austin and beyond which will remain on view through July 4. A limited number of works will also be for sale.

A symposium titled About Face, also at the museum, on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Denver Art Museum, including screenings and an incredible panel of typophiles.

The first screening of Typeface, a film about the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Wisconsin, was actually last night {Thursday}at Starz FilmCenter on the Auraria campus with special appearance by Filmmaker Justine Nagan. There are more opportunities to see it, including tonight {Friday}from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Denver Art Museum’s monthly Untitled event, an evening of what Rick Griffith calls “typography tomfoolery” on the theme of Typo. Foot-press printing demos with Griffith, a typography scavenger hunt and a Scrabble tournament are just a few of the related events included.

Noggin

Noggin is now Nick Jr. – I’m not thrilled with the name change but I am psyched that they kept the whimsical & imaginative tweener graphics and branding that I have always adored. The design is eclectic and clever. While there is plenty not to love, there is nothing as bad as Barney on this commercial-less channel. I am especially fond of the Noggin song, Everywhere I go, that says:

Days are the sunniest
Jokes are the funniest
Rabbits are the bunny-est
Hives are the honey-est
Elephants the ton-iest
Troubles – they’re the none-iest Everywhere I go!

Straws are the bend-iest
Time is the spend-iest
Cards are the send-iest
Books are the lend-iest
Fun’s the pretend-iest
Friends are the friend-iest Everywhere I go!

Berries are the fruit-iest
Shoes are the boot-iest
Puppies are the cute-iest

There is a character on Wow Wow Wubbzy that has a southern accent and I love Yo! Gabba Gabba with its lo-fi, almost Sesame Street sev feel, it’s nearly nostalgic. I think Ellen DeGeneres should be their next guest, she would come up with a good dancy-dance. Though I said I never would use the “electronic babysitter” – I must admit I do from time to time. I mean, It’s like pre-school on TV!
