BirdDog im{press}ions

a little something, something

Must take some time off from blogging to catch up on designing and printing WEDDINGS! I have too many ideas and need to focus. So I leave you with the video from Friday, illustrating our letterpress printing process, a photo of one of our favorite local event venues, Planet Bluegrass Ranch {complete with a chance to vote for Lyons to win America’s Coolest Small Town} AND this:

Something old represents the couple’s friends who will hopefully remain close during the marriage . Traditionally this was an old garter given to the bride by a happily married woman in the hope that her happiness in her marriage and the stability of married life would be passed on to the new bride.

Something new represents the new adventure the newlyweds’ are embarking on as a married couple along with a happy and prosperous future.

Something borrowed is often lent by the bride’s family and is an item much valued by the family. The bride must return the item to ensure good luck. This symbolizes the love and support of family and friends

Something blue originated in ancient Israel where the bride wore a blue ribbon in her hair to represent love and fidelity.

And a sixpence in your shoe was to ensure wealth to the couple in married life. Today some brides substitute a penny in their shoe during the ceremony, as silver sixpences are less common.

pinecone wood wedding invite

A closer look at the creation for 5280 Magazine, a pinecone adorned veneer invitation letterpress printed with vintage wood type. We had the opportunity to create something specific for the look & feel of an inspired winter wedding for the mountain bride. Think fireside toasts in a cozy log cabin, aisles of snowflake flocked pine trees and toe-warming hot chocolate cocktails.

5280 Magazine January 2010

The Bird Dog’s spirits are 5,280 feet {or a mile high} today. On newsstands now, the January 2010 issue of 5280 Magazine, page 79, you will find a feature article by Julie Dugdale, Warm Reception an inspiration on winter weddings – featuring BirdDog Press wedding paper goods! And great to be mentioned alongside Calluna Events.

client catch up

Today, I had the pleasure of catching up with a client from the summertime. Her guestbook had a little spilling accident at the wedding, so she brought it back for repair and we talked about holiday cards. I am thankful for opportunities to reconnect with clients, having repeat clients and collaborative client efforts!

This is another of our famous envelope books, handbound with letterpress signatures and a coptic stitch. Guests wrote messages on cards and tucked them into an envelope, we saved room for rsvp cards and other memorabilia, too.

What a wonderful weekend for a wedding. One of my very favorite clients, Keira Ritter, came to me recently to print invitations for her sure to be fabulous wedding in Dunton Hot Springs this past weekend. This is a quick shot of the work-in-process version as we were figuring out just what combination of wheat, veneer, grommets and wood type to use. Finished product and maybe even some photography from the wedding, coming soon!

Rounding out this whopper of a Wedding Wednesday, I must shout out the Calluna Events 5th Anniversary Celebration earlier this year. I have had the pleasure of working on many a wedding with Heather over the years, and here’s cheers to many more.

This couple sought to integrate all of their wedding paper goods from our very first meeting, a truly organized and thoughtful pair. We conceptualized everything from the save-the-date all the way to the reception table numbers in one cohesive collaboration. Kimmie + Roger’s overall design sparked from the detail of  the wedding gown. I am rarely in attendance at the weddings I design for so it is nice to have the photographer’s paper shots in action.

Kimmie and Roger’s reception tables were named for their favorite books, and in turn, the escort cards were bookmarks.

Simple chipboard with a typographical design and pop of color with the orange envelope completes this ensemble for a down-home celebration on the family farm.

Custom maps are big fun, especially when they guide guests to a place like The Rockhouse in Negril. This is one of those destination weddings that I get to design and print for, and would almost do it for free just to be invited!
